Bananas Foster Meets Cinnamon Roll: An Adult Twist on a Classic
I had a hankering for cinnamon rolls recently, but I wanted to try something different—something with an intense banana flavor and an adult kick. After mulling it over for a while, my mind drifted back to a showstopper dessert I had years ago on vacation: bananas foster!
With that delicious memory as inspiration, I got to work.
The Recipe Evolution
I started with my existing cinnamon roll recipe and made a few key modifications:
Removed 1/4 of the sugar
Added 3 mashed, ripe bananas
Incorporated two shots of rum into the dough
The bananas and rum made everything more liquid than my usual dough, so I chilled the mixture thoroughly before rolling and cutting. This extra step was crucial for getting clean rolls that held their shape.
But I wasn't done yet. I also added a splash of rum to my heavy cream soak—that magical ingredient that gives my cinnamon rolls their signature ooey-gooey deliciousness.
The Result
The final product? Absolutely spectacular. Rich banana flavor, a subtle rum warmth, and all the indulgent, pillowy goodness you expect from a proper cinnamon roll. It's like dessert and breakfast had a beautiful, grown-up baby.
I added some brulee’d bananas on top, but next time I’ll use some dehydrated banana chips for an extra textural note!
What's Next?
With this delicious experiment now in my repertoire, I'm thinking about other ways to transform the base cinnamon roll recipe into seasonally themed desserts year-round. Pumpkin spice for fall? Peppermint for winter? Strawberry for spring?
